JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Systems Programmer I Reports to: Mainframe Technical Support, Manager Department: Information Technology Job Status: Exempt
JOB SUMMARY Participate in the day-to-day support, planning and building of Kentucky Farm Bureau’s z\OS systems. This position will work closely with Senior Systems Programmers and several Infrastructure and Operations business units such as IT Operations, Distributed Systems, Network, Security Administration, and Application Development teams to ensure high availability and deliver quality support services. This entry level position may provide participatation on complex projects and is considered to be a major contributor/specialist within the Mainframe group. This high-energy, results oriented job requires a balance of strong technical/business skills, understanding of business processes, a sense of urgency resolving problem issues, a willingness to enhance skills, creativity, work schedule flexibility, adaptability to changing business conditions and a commitment to customer satisfaction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Research and apply proactive software maintenance. • Perform problem diagnostics and resolution. • Monitor systems performance and tune when appropriate. • Participate in infrastructure architecture related issues. • Provide creative solutions and build scenarios utilizing best in class methodology based on ITIL practices. • Constantly analyze processes and methods, striving for improvement to both systems and the environment. • Use performance reports/metrics to identify improvement opportunities. • Train IT Operations and Applications personnel. • Conduct production readiness reviews of change events, assessing impacts and risks. • Develop wellness check processes and procedures for other support personnel. • Contribute to root cause investigation. • Participate in the evaluation and selection of new hardware and operating systems components as required to meet new or changed business needs. • Document changes to infrastructure configuration. • Support and implement assigned Kentucky Farm Bureau projects and initiatives. • Update system configuration and resource definitions when required. • Develop and communicate IT standards. • Prepare for and participate in disaster recovery exercises. • Research and configure new technologies on the z/platform. • Regular, predictable attendance. • This list of essential functions is non-exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.

Experience and Education:
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS ·Bachelor's degree (BS) in Computer Science or Information Systems, plus three(3) years' experience in working with mainframe systems or equivalent combination of education and experience. ·Two (2) or more years of hands-on experience installing, configuring, implementing, tuning, and debugging z/OS in a large I.T. environment. ·Proven participation in mainframe projects and relevant experience with current technologies, both hardware and software. ·Demonstrated expertise in a variety of the mainframe’s concepts, practices, and procedures. ·Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. ·This job will encompass a variety of mainframe z/OS operating system software installation/maintenance/support assignments. It may also include ISV product functionality comparisons, de-commissioning of existing products, installation of new products, transitioning products from test to QA to production environments, and providing business area / end user technical support. ·Direct hands-on experience performing z/OS systems programming maintenance/installation, JES2, IBM program product installations, and independent software vendor (ISV) installations. ·A working knowledge of SMP/E, IPCS, I/O subsystems, and mainframe hardware configuration. ·Familiarity with IBM RACF, CA/ACF2, or CA Top Secret desired. ·Experience with CICS and DB2 and WLM a plus. ·Must be able to manage your own work with minimal supervision, and be willing to invest the effort required to enhance both technical and professional skills. ·Strong interpersonal skills, communications skills, and ability to work as a team member are essential. ·Project planning and project management skills. ·Must be proactive, possess professional engineering skills, must be able to be hands on, with the ability to handle stressful situations and maintain composure under pressure. ·Aggressive problem diagnosis and creative problem solving skills on highly complex problems and possess technical agility to implement solutions quickly and accurately. ·Ability to put together solid business / technical proposals. ·Familiarity with z/OS, REXX, Assembler, Monitoring Tools, and Problem Solving Tools. ·Conceptual knowledge of Parallel Sysplex and USS (UNIX Systems Services). ·Open Systems skills (UNIX, Linux) a plus. |
