Responsibilities

Job Title: Property Claim Adjuster
Reports to: District Claim Manager
Department: Claims
Job Status: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY
The property claim adjuster provides prompt, courteous, and fair claim service on major property claims within all territory handled out of the district claim office to which he/she is assigned. Will also function as a catastrophe team member when the team is mobilized. All job activities should be carried out in a professional manner consistent with company policy and supervisory instruction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•Handle all major property claims assigned.
•Confirm coverage and conduct prompt and thorough investigations.
•Inspect damaged property and prepare written estimate of damage.
•Document claim files to support action taken.
•Promptly evaluate and resolve claims through settlement or denial.
•Actively pursue salvage recovery.
•Assist subrogation unit with subrogation recovery.
•Maintain adequate reserves.
•Assist the special investigative unit with suspicious property claims.
•Report claims as required.
•Promptly respond to all complaints.
•Report immediately the receipt of all summons.
•Prepare for participation and assist with litigated claims as required.
•Promptly review claim inventory reports.
•Handle claims to comply with the Unfair Claim Settlement Practices Act.
•Attend company-sponsored meetings, seminars, and continuing education activities.
•Serve as a catastrophe team member or assist in other claim offices or locations as required.
•Regular, predictable attendance.

Experience and Education:

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
•Maintain knowledge of building repair industry, property policy contracts, court decisions, and industry trends.
•Properly use and maintain company equipment, supplies, and automobile.
•Report to the Underwriting Department all incorrectly rated policies and poor risks. Advise sales agent when possible, prior to reporting.
•Submit expense report as required.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
•Physical demands: Sitting Mobility Climbing ladders Driving an automobile Normal vision/hearing (with or without corrections) Speaking Prolonged periods away from home
•Mental demands: Analytic reasoning Prolonged concentration
•Environmental factors: Working outdoors Extreme cold, below 32 degrees for more than one hour Standard office lighting, temperature, and noise.
•Equipment: Telephone Dictation equipment Automobile Ladder Camera Laptop computer

QUALIFICATIONS
•Combination of formal education, training, and experience to acquire knowledge and skills generally equivalent to those possessed by a four-year college graduate. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
•Ability to interpret property policy contracts and legal documents.
•Knowledge of the building repair industry.
•Knowledge of computerized estimating systems would be beneficial.
•Continuing insurance education courses desired.
•Basic keyboarding skill.
•Minimum of two years experience in the investigation, evaluation, and settlement of property claims.
•Minimum of two years experience in preparing property estimates.
•Strong written, verbal, and listening communication skills.
•Ability to make timely decisions.
•Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
•Good negotiation and public relations skills.
