Job Title Supervised Directly: A team of 5-8 people consisting of two solution architects, three data architects, and an enterprise testing team.

JOB SUMMARY

The enterprise architect is a strong leader with a broad and deep technology background who can develop a solid grasp of the insurance carrier business. This person should be able to communicate equally effectively with business leaders and technical practitioners. The enterprise architect should be an excellent program manager and have a thorough understanding of how Enterprise Architecture can enable the corporate direction toward scalability and agility while drawing on experiences from other companies with a similar challenge. The primary focus is application system architecture. This person should establish a compelling vision of how the enterprise architecture team will operate.

The Enterprise Architect faces the challenge of mapping out and implementing system architectures utilizing rapidly changing technologies within an environment undergoing significant transformation.
Experience and Education:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Develop and manage a business and technical architecture competency focused on delivering business value.
• The focus of the enterprise architect is application system architecture.
• Support business priorities as a trusted advisor enabling informed technology investment decisions by providing insight and advice on technology costs, challenges and risks.
• Create clarity for the business by establishing and maintaining practical strategic technology direction and migration roadmaps in response to changing business conditions.
• Advise and assist the Vice President of IT, Director of PMO, and Corporate IT Directors with respect to technical strategies, directions and opportunities.
• Advise and assist eBusiness Strategy Team in developing the strategy to progressively release functionality to customers that augment and coordinate with agencies services.
• Ensure business leaders are aware of opportunities to apply emerging technologies and best-practices to increase revenue growth, productivity and cost efficiency.
• Maximize IT effectiveness by developing and managing a practical architectural leadership function to align projects with best practices, industry standards and especially other technology efforts within the department.
• Develop points of view on the adoption of new technologies and industry trends graspable to a Business and IT audience.
• Ensure continuity between the architecture, development and infrastructure activities.
• Provide leadership and direction to professionals within the enterprise architecture organization.
• Develop a high performance team with technology domain expertise in the areas of data, business rules, application, integration, workflow, document management, security and other core technologies.
• Review workload and staffing requirements, make recommendations regarding employment, promotions, evaluations, salary adjustments, and termination. Motivate and empower staff for optimum performance while encouraging innovation.
• Develop and maintain a set of artifacts such as the technology plan, reference architectures, architecture standards, guidelines and best practices.
• Regular, predictable attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems.
• 10+ years of professional information technology experience.
• 7+ years of designing and implementing complex IT systems.
• 5+ years managing teams of 5-6 people within corporate IT department.
• Knowledge of insurance industry trends will set a candidate apart from others.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills combined with the ability to build relationships with business and technology stakeholders.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills with executive and technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to implement business-driven architecture capabilities in a complex environment.
• Experience in having facilitated strategic architecture planning (e.g. a plan consisting of current state, future state, roadmap) on multiple occasions, preferably for an insurance carrier.
• In-depth knowledge of technical architectural disciplines including:
o Business architecture
o Systems architecture and infrastructure
o Information and data modeling tools and techniques
o Software development lifecycle
o Service-oriented business architecture
o Object-oriented and component software engineering
o Multiple-tier distributed architecture design
o Legacy mainframe platform and integration techniques
o Current and emerging integration tools, patterns and
frameworks
o Sarbanes-Oxley compliance
o Security and controls
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team of highly skilled IT personnel.
• Experience with multiple technologies (e.g. Java, .Net, COBOL/JCL, C), platforms (e.g. Windows, z/OS v. 1.8+, CICS v. 2.x+, DB/2 v. 7+, SQL Server), integration methodologies (e.g. online processing, queued messaging, web services, DB/2 Connect, batch processing, and extract, transform and load or ETL). Mainframe and/or large scale systems integration experience preferred.
